we are up in maine right now and there is a huge patch of nasturtiums growing right outside our house. while nasturtiums grow in the south, they often can get too hot, but here in the 70 degree temps of maine they are thriving. plus, there is a beautiful range of hues to these, and even some variegated leaves too...
plus, the petals are edible- these ended up in our salad later that night...

the other day i had a photoshoot and needed some seasonal ingredients...they did not have to be actual flowers, but i wanted my photographs to have a botanical feeling, but also one that did not feel store-bought. i walked through the yard and cut a few specimens, and also went and gathered some of my pressed specimens from my studio. each cutting brought a pop of color to my shoot, plus i got to enjoy them in my studio afterwards...the gardenias, in particular, were so fragrant!

two weeks ago, rebecca shared photographs of her new house. here, i am sharing photographs of her house that i took this fall...i love how rebecca has something from outside- a cutting, a flower, a pod- in every room of her house. most of these things end up in her paintings eventually, but in the meantime they make for beautiful vignettes.
there are so many things that we consistently return to for inspiration around here. for me, one of these touchstones is the work of walter anderson, the late artist who spent most of his life living along the coast of mississippi. his work is so vivid and so evocative. words don't do it justice. but, his life story is even more amazing. rather than trying to sum it up here, i invite you to please visit the walter anderson museum's website to read more about him and see his work. in the meantime, take a moment to look through these images of his Little Room. they were taken way back in 2004 on a visit to ocean springs. the Little Room was a space where Anderson would retreat to paint. it was a private space, hidden from his family until after his death...they had never been inside until then. what a wonder it must have been to cross this threshold. if his work moves you, please consider donating to his museum or to Realizations, run by anderson's family, to support the preservation of his legacy.
