kinfolk community gathering
we were very happy to discover kinfolk magazine when they published their first issue. we were even happier to be able to contribute, in a small way, to a few of their issues through our photos. so, now, we are equally happy to be hosting a dinner, here in athens, georgia, on their behalf...
on saturday, may 4, we will be hosting one of an on-going series of community gatherings- this one, a flower potluck. tickets are available here. there will be concurrent dinners happening all over the globe- athens is in good company!
we will walk through the garden, cut some flowers then have a simple flower arranging workshop led by rinne. we will also have food & drink provided by our friend nathan brand of the national and shotgun dinners. our friend hope hilton will be illustrating something special for each guest, and kristen and rinne will be talking photographs, so we will share them with you soon.
so, until then go grab some flowers, wherever you are and enjoy them.

sowing seeds
We just moved to a place with a big garden in the country. I have been chipping away at planting it and yesterday I finally had an entire day to work on it. We got most of our seeds from seed exchange places with heirloom varieties, many that are new to me. We are getting excited for a plentiful season and making lots of meals from our garden!

seasonal bloom, in the garden
we just harvested the last of the lemons from the trees in our garden...we have grouped them in clusters on our table along with the last of our persimmons. they are pretty like this, on their own. some images from this series appeared here.

Growing Shitakes
We recently visited with our friends Mandy and Steve at their farm, 3 Porch Farm. We were there in the Spring when Steve began the Shitake inoculation process....and here we are 5 months later with pounds of mushrooms. It was a little exciting.
Folk Art Garden
We stumbled accross this charming garden while we were in Asheville. Tucked away in a neighborhood, it caught my eye.
The beds were lined with rusty farm tools and shovels, painted bottle trees, charms adorning branches, and there was a litlle area filled with metal tonka trucks. We had a fun little visit.
Fresh Tomato Bruschetta
Right about now our tomato plants are exhausted from the heat or are having a second blast after a couple of cooler days. Our plants have been troopers all summer long and given us plenty of great tomatoes. With our basil plant fuller than ever I decided to make some bruschetta. Nothing tastes better than a tomato...fresh off the vine!
Ingredients
fresh tomatoes
garlic
basil
salt olive oil
directions
Chop everything up coarsely and toss together in a bowl.
Let ingredients rest for 15 minutes and then drain juices.
Spoon over fresh French Bread that is thinly sliced and lightly toasted.
