our friend, and fellow Athenian, Hugh Acheson came out with his second cookbook in may of this year (and, a disclaimer: I was happy to again help him with the photographs for it). titled The Broad Fork, this book is aimed at guiding you through the seasonal bounty of ingredients anytime of the year: fall, winter, spring, & summer.
the cookbook has been on our counter a lot the last month as we have cooked our way through our backyard garden patch and the farmer's market. another great thing about the cookbook is that it has a range of recipes, with easy ones as well as more advanced recipes, which makes it a good cookbook for just about anyone.
enjoy!

i was going through some photographs and came across these images from a lunch we had with our friends down in devereux, near sparta...the menu was simple and fresh...much of it homegrown. enjoy the simplicity of the pictures and the pretty palette...

Read Moreit saddens us to hear that atlanta-based chef ryan hidinger passed away yesterday. please take a moment to read about the non-profit that grew out of his experience, the giving kitchen & consider supporting their cause.

Read Morein late july, rinne hosted the second in a series of gatherings on behalf of kinfolk magazine. intended to bring people together to learn and enjoy each other (as well as good food & drink), the gatherings have been a great way to introduce folks to new things; this time around we were out at 3 porch farm where mandy and steve led everyone on a tour of their farm. they also guided us in a honey tasting; the honey we tasted came from all over the world! the group also learned to make infused honey...using dried herbs and flower petals. we tasted some mead, made by booger hill bee, as well as honey lemonade and a honey wheat beer. the spread of edible treats included different cow's milk cheeses from sweetgrass dairy in south georgia, as well as bread from the bakery down the road, the comerian. thank you to everyone who came! and, for those who are really inspired, the state botanical garden in athens has beekeeping classes coming up in late fall.

in the spring, i hosted a flower potluck party on behalf of kinfolk magazine...for the summer community gathering, we will be going to 3 porch farm to celebrate the honey harvest. our farming friends, mandy & steve, will lead a tour of their beautiful farm and talk about beekeeping and honey harvesting. the group will also taste different local honey, make their own herbal-infused honey, and enjoy food & drink made with honey: mead, cookies, and the famous honeypops that 3 porch farm makes themselves.
if you would like to come along to the gathering, you may purchase tickets here.

Arrow is a local nonprofit community space that was founded three years ago here in athens by two mamas (full disclosure: i am one of those mamas). Arrow offers workshops and classes for families with young children, and the little ones also participate in morning activities there on their own. it is a sweet place. this winter, Arrow released a community cookbook as a fundraiser, to share some favorite recipes. gathered from friends & family, the cookbook includes over 80 recipes...many from Arrow parents, but also from folks who really, really cook alot like hugh acheson, tamar adler, natalie chanin, peter dale, liana krissoff, mimi maumus, dean neff, whitney otawka, chuck ramsey, and many others. the cookbook was printed locally, with covers screenprinted by the ladies at double dutch, and is for sale through Arrow, treehouse, avid bookshop, and farm 255.

this thanksgiving, our family went to the mountains. we had beautiful weather the whole time and went on lots of long walks in the woods. since we were away from home, we decided to have a non-traditional holiday meal. mostly, we were guided by what came in our CSA box: we had sliced watermelon radishes on our green salad; we roasted veggies, simply in olive oil and sea salt; we had sweet potato casserole, of course, because, well, we love sweet potatoes. we also grilled salmon on cedar planks made by our friends, and fellow athenians, fire & flavor. the most fun was walking in the woods with my oldest son to gather ingredients for our table centerpiece: feathers, leaves, rocks, nuts, mixed in with persimmons and lemons from our home garden.
