this junk shop's signage caught my eye last weekend on a drive to north georgia.
i've been going to edisto island for 20 years, and every year i go to george and pink's produce stand. off the main road and down a long sandy road canopied by ancient live oaks dripping with spanish moss, pink sells locally grown everything . she always remembers us, and we look forward to visiting. now she's expanded to homeade jams and pies. so much southern food to feast on!
over the past couple of weeks we have spent some time home sitting in the country. our daily duties were to care for the horses, sheep, chickens, dogs, cats, count the cows, and water the gardens and greenhouse. i always day dream about living in the country, it was fun to spend some mornings, evenings, and days away from the city. i love so many things about small city living, but the county always seems to call my name. i love the idea of waking up to an open field, fresh eggs, letting my dogs roam, listening to the crickets, watch a field of glowing fireflies, and making friends with neighboring farmers. i enjoyed going on walks with my camera and documenting the details, enjoy!
a morning view from the kitchen window. i guess the chickens like cat food!
breakfast
some evening fishing enjoying the country quiet.
and then we headed home.
my friends carrie and catie cooked up this yummy sauce from the figs in their back yard. this time of year the fig trees are exploding with their lovely fruits.
enjoy!
recipe follows
carrieʼs fig bbq sauce
2 tbsp olive oil
1 medium vidalia onion diced
2 banana peppers diced
1 anaheim pepper diced
2 tsp. salt
sweat the peppers and onions in oil and salt until translucent then
add:
1 1/2 c. diced tomatoes (juice and all)
3 c. diced figs
1 c. white vinegar
1/ 3 c. ketchup (I like Heinz)
add enough honey to sweeten to your preference
2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
2 tsp dijon mustard
1 tsp minced garlic
1 tsp ancho chili powder
1 tsp minced fresh rosemary
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp white pepper
bring the sauce to a gentle boil then turn down and simmer for 45 minutes.
puree and jar
i was driving to my friends house and saw this little field of sunflowers. i wouldn't mind seeing this every day on my way to work!
there is nothing sweeter than finding a farmers market or vegetables stand in a little country town. we bumped into this one on a recent country drive.
our local roastery is a gem to athens. not only do they roast coffee for the entire city but they have a little coffee shop a block from downtown.
its rustic charm mixed with the smells from roasting beans make it a great place to sit around with a cup of coffee. you can sit on the front porch or at the handmade tables inside, and in the winter there is a wood burning stove that makes it nice and cozy.
enjoy a few of the details..
i love to admire the old time signage throughout
the coffee bags from all of the different countries are so lovely!
here's vernon, a local celebrity around town. on friday you can find him delivering coffee bags to all of the downtown restaurants....on an old school bicycle of course.
(sorry for the light spot on his face)
the great signage on the side of the building.
